There are two main comments people make when meeting her:
1. She's huge! and
2. She's so fair!
Both of these are surprises, as we're short and Italian. Well, Anthony's half Polish, which is where we assume the fair complexion and light hair comes from. She still lacks eyebrows, too. She looks darker in most photographs than she is, so I'll have to find one that's truer to life. She's the only person in the world who can make ME look tan (I'm mostly translucent).
And now for our product roundup.
While I was pregnant, I joined a pregnancy board where women talked about their "must-have" products for newborns. The top 3 things most moms mentioned were (a) a bouncer, (b) a swing, and (c) the Miracle Blanket. That hasn't held up for me, aside from maybe the Miracle Blanket. Maybe.
Sarina never took to her bouncer, and she's iffy about the Fisher-Price swing. Sometimes she stays in it, but she often fusses after about 10 minutes and wants out. It doesn't seem very comfortable; it's not cushiony. The Miracle Blanket was helpful for about a month, but she soon proved her Houdini Baby capability and managed to squiggle her way out of it every night.
But there are certainly other products I've loved, and a few I loathe. Here they are, not in much of an order.
The Best
The Moby Wrap Baby Carrier
-Fisher-Price Melodies & Lights Deluxe Gym
-Gerber Nuk Newborn Pacifiers
-Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set
-Precious Moments mobile: One of the first things she ever smiled at, this one gets her all excited. Only problem is that it's a wind-up that lasts only about a minute, so I have to stand there winding and winding again.
-Playtex Embrace Breast Pump System
-The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD
-Laura Ashley stroller and car seat (travel system): Pretty, easy to fold and unfold, easy to push around, comfortable for her... very happy with this.
-Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
-Prince Lionheart Complete Drying Station
The Worst
-Diaper Genie II: You have to stick your hand in to push down the diapers and wipes each time, really smushing them in there... which, as you might imagine, gets gross. My parents bought the Baby Trend Diaper Champ
-My Brest Friend breastfeeding pillow: Someone recommended this to me, but I can't figure out why. It's more expensive than the Boppy, it's hard, it's cumbersome, and you have to fasten yourself into it each time. Didn't fit us right. If I had it to do over, I wish I'd have bought a Boppy instead.
-Little Einstein music CDs: Earplugs just aren't strong enough.
-Mother's Milk tea: Had the opposite of its intended effect on me.
-Fisher-Price Aquarium Bath Center: She hated the hammock thingee, and was pretty much too big for it from birth (read: not good for tall babies). It's also a pain to get the hammock part clean. Now she's in the main part of the tub, but there's a plastic hump that falls in the wrong place for her, and she tries to stand up when it makes her uncomfortable. Egads. I'm always soaked and frazzled after trying to bathe her. I plan to buy a different tub soon.
-Huggies Gentle Care diapers: You've never seen a diaper blowout until you've seen what Sarina can accomplish when wearing these horrible, horrible diapers. I mean, poop everywhere. And I had to be dumb enough to put one on her before putting her in the car seat. I'm going to be cleaning poop out of the car until 2026. (Hey, can anyone recommend a really good diaper? So far the best of the lot for us is Pampers Baby Dry, but she still has about a 50% blowout rate.)

ReplyDeleteJenna,
ReplyDeleteThis is what I found out about the first child. They may hate the thing at first and then love it at six months old. I recommend trying them again at different intervals to see if they change their mind.
(also my children hated the swing, they are both sensitive to motion and get ill in the car - which is why that driving around to get them to go to sleep never worked very well.)
K
We just use regular old Huggies, and have been surprised that there haven't been that many blowouts.
ReplyDeleteAs long as he's entertained by a toy of some form or fashion, swings and saucer seats don't seem to faze him.
We seem to prefer Graco products.
Sometimes a kid just blows out a diaper regardless of what you do. I preferred Pampers until Piper was about a year, and now I use Parents' Choice. The thing I have to do after I put the diaper on is pull the edges out and over her butt cheeks or she'll poo out the sides every time.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we used this Safety 1st Comfy Duck Bath Center
. Now, some of the reviews complain of mold, but I set it in our tub to use and then turned it upside down after we were done, and it tore up or molded. I'm saving it for the next kid.
The sling works great, and once you start using the tub portion, her bum slides right down into a secured spot and fits very well. After Piper got big enough to sit up fairly well, I just ran a shallow bath in the smaller tub of the house and she did that. Of course, they have little inflatable tubs, foamy cushions, and slings.
And, obviously I have missing words today, as part of the above should read, "it never tore up or molded."
ReplyDeletePiper's cutting her last four teeth, and I'm getting sleep deprived again.
Finn blew out every single Huggies diaper he ever had on. Pee, poop, not so much pee or poop... it was awful. He's been in Pampers exclusively since then. Swaddlers, up until he out grew them, were the best we've come across. Now he's in the Pampers cruisers and they work great. We haven't had a blow out since the Huggies. I didn't like the diaper genie or the breast friend pillow. A friend lent me hers to see if I'd like it, and we ended up going out and buying the Boppy. I LOVE IT!!! Seriously, LOVE IT. I don't think I could have lived through the first three months without it. Okay, I'm sure I could have, but it was great! You should go get one. Plus, Sarina can use it as a little lounger when she's ready to sit up but not quite crawling.
ReplyDeleteJenna-I enjoy your blogging! :-) I "met" you first on absolute write and now have been reading your blog. I was about 35 weeks pregnant when I found it and now I have an 8 week old...also a little girl. I am a huge fan of the moby wrap also...works like a charm and Felicity likes it. It can be a bit hot on the hot days out here but I still like it. I get the funniest looks though...but it's hilarious to me still.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a writer...by no means even close to as accomplished as you are, but I'm trying to get into the swing of things with editing my current ms (historical fiction) and trying to write my grandmother's life (only as a family keepsake).
I'd love to know your tips as to how to write and be a full-time wife and mom at the same time...ADVICE????
I have your link on my blog b/c your success is a great journey to follow and to motivate all of us other writers.

PS: Feliicty leaked constantly with Huggies Preemie diapers...but honestly hasn't had 1 blow out yet...she's 8 wks old! My family and friends are stunned as am I. She has leaked urine a few times and a LITTLE #2 once on one of her legs. I'm sure I'm jinxing it at this very moment!

Elizabeth, congratulations! I have no good advice yet on being a writer and a mom, because so far I'm failing at trying to return to writing. I figure this is still my "maternity leave." :)
ReplyDeleteSara, I keep wanting to go ahead and buy the Boppy, but how long did you use it? If I can get at least 3 months' use of it, I'll probably do it. (Sarina is almost 4 months old now.) And I did indeed switch to the Pampers Swaddlers. Big improvement!
TJ, I just put a big foamy thing in the bath we have, and that helped. I think I'll probably just use it that way until she's ready for the tub seat thingee.
Kelly, good tip-- thanks!
Jenna- Dan still uses the Boppy when he puts Finn down for a nap. It makes it easier to snuggle. But I haven't used it in a couple months, since he was about 9 months.
