I'm very happy to say that my next book, The Marilyn Monroe Treasures (coming in October from Metro Books), is a Book of the Month Club pick, and the Spanish and Italian rights have been sold. It looks like other foreign editions will follow soon. I've seen the galleys and they look terrific.
I've had just one other foreign edition before, so this is exciting to me.
I'm still having a heckuva time trying to figure out how to balance motherhood and writing, though. I need to sell something huge so I can take a break until Sarina's in elementary school! Got any bestselling book ideas that you don't plan to use lying around?

Yes, Jenna. I have a million-dollar book idea that I'm not going to use. You're welcome to it! (In fact, I'll buy the first copy.)
ReplyDeleteWrite a book that reveals the secret of how to balance writing and motherhood. :) But make it an audio book, with lullabies playing in the background so moms have time to read it.
I have one, too. A book about nothing. Hey, worked for Seinfeld!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did Sarina win? I voted for her. They were all cute, but she's special.
aka Serena Casey
Congrats on all the good fortune!
ReplyDeleteI hope all is well. you've been in my thoughts!
I noticed in the Classmates a note that you wanted to know if anyone new Marilyn. I met her when I was delivering the Evening Outlook in Brentwood. I met her some time shortly after she moved in there with Henry Miller, and she stayed after they broke up. The last time I talked with her was shortly before I entered the Air Force, and it was only months after that that I learned of her death. I lived two block from her house.
ReplyDeleteThe last conversation I had with her, she was telling me about her work on the Misfits.
Oh, John, I wish you had found me a few weeks ago! The book is already headed to the printer, so I can't add anything at this point.
ReplyDeleteSerena, the contest's not over yet, but I think she's getting her butt kicked by a few other little ones with big families. ;)
And thanks, Tabitha and Carolyn. Carolyn, I'm afraid if lullabies are playing in the background, I'll just nod right off!
Sorry Jenna, I just hope this is not another story of how Marilyn was a drug user and heavy drinker. She was actually a very nice woman. Very easy to talk to and as a neighbor I considered her a wonderful person. She had a rose garden, and loved tending her roses. I told her once I tried out for a school play, but couldn't remember my lines. She told me she had the same problem, but they used to put up her lines so she could read them just out of view of the camera.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn lived south of me and Darren McGavin lived one block north. My classmates at University High School were such people as Ryan O'Neal, Nancy Sinatra (she sat behind me in Home Room), Jim Mitchum, Bruce Johnston later to become one of the Beach Boys, and Tom Rettig who was a good friend through the 12th grade. The Life and times at University High School in the 50's would make a good story. Jan & Dean were there. Living in Brentwood was never dull, but not the high point of my life.
Jenna,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! It's a very big deal and I'm very happy for you.
I hope your Marilyn book turns into a million-dollar book!
And tell Carolyn Erickson over there that I DID write a book on balancing writing and motherhood. Okay, so it's not an audio book with lullabies in the background, but I think it's pretty helpful. ;)
I have a great audio rec too. "The Seal Maiden" by Karen Casey is totally awesome for rocking little ones to sleep. Keeps moms entertained too.
Go mom writers!
Christina, of course I know about your book! I remembered it right after as I clicked "Publish." :D
ReplyDelete(But yeah, lullabies in the background is the million-dollar touch imho. If moms nod off, it just goes to show how much they needed a good nap! ;) )
Congrats! It sounds like your book is doing well! Do you already have another project that you're working on?
